I have a lhasa apso and am wondering how much I am supposed to feed her, like is it half a...?
My wife (when she was alive) and I, breed and raised in our home - 39 Lhasa Apso dogs. I was the one who took care of all of their daily needs for over 20 years, and still do with the last one I have here with me. So I know exactly what to do. First of all, a Lhasa is a "puppy" for the first 3 years of its life. They live between 16 to 18 years -MAX, depending on how well You take care of them. Each one I had, had/has their own distinct "eating" likes and dislikes. I never ever feed my Lilac (a 24 lb. female) any of that garbage canned dogfood. It’s nothing but cooked animal waste materials and dangerous for Your Beloved pet. Once in awhile (if she’s in the mood) she’ll eat some Purina (Moist & Meaty) Turkey & Rice, Chicken, or Beef. This food comes 12 individual packs to a box of 12, and costs arond $5.45 per box. One pack per day is enough per dog: (Max. 1 & 1/2 packs per day). Purina is a ’SAFE’ company to deal with. In the case of MY Lilac, she gets the following cooked items alternating daily. Chicken livers, chicken hearts and gizzards, inexpensive steak, pot roast when I cook one for myself, and turkey at Thanksgiving and Christmas. During the rest of the year, I alternate various other food items on occasions. However, I watch her fat and salt intake very carefully. Every morning, Lilac gets a small handful of ’puppy yummies’. This amounts to 1 of the new "Jerky Chicken Tenders" broken into small pieces, a sliver of Pedigree Denta Stix, 4 very small puppy bones, 1 Vitamin on Monday’s (only), 6 or 7 tiny pieces of assorted (hard) cat bits from little bags - not the soft ones, and (very once in a while) a piece of soft "Greenies" cut into tiny pieces with a knief. This is enough for her breakfast every day. DO NOT feed Your dog any of those "Bacon Strips (and the like) for Dogs found in Your Supermarkets. They’re loaded with FAT. They will cause Your dog to become Very FAT VERY QUICKLY. Make sure You give Your dog ONLY SMALL pieces of whatever YOU feed it. Lhasa Apso’s have small teeth and they break easily. Make absolutely sure that You have Your dog’s teeth cleaned by a vet at least once a year, every year. Do it at the same time it gets it’s puppy Parvo (and or Rabies) shots. Also, Lhasa’s generally weigh 14 to 32 pounds for the large Canadian ones. I had a pure breed one in excellent condition, who weighed 32 pounds. Generally, mine weighed 20 to 25 pounds, with the smallest at 15. So Your’s at 18 will probably gain a bit more yet, then stop. Do not be alarmed. It’s normal. Not all Lhasa books are the same. Read a variety to get a total view of Your friend. I did, then I let my Lilac tell me what she likes and doesn’t. Each one is different. Also, Lhasa’s are VERY INTELLIGENT AND SMART. I have an absolutely Wonderful friend and companion with mine. I treat her just like if she was a human instead of a dog. By the way, Lhasa’s can see most colors as well as we do. I wish You and Your Lhasa many years of Happiness together. Thank you for Your question.
